Small Guy Visits Puerto Vallarta

Small Guy es muy hambre! Yep, I am always hungry and I love to try new restaurants. So, last Friday I decided to take a trip to Puerto Vallarta. Not the town, but a local restaurant off of 48th & L. The location used to be a Firebarn and before that Buffalo Wild Wings. Now, when I first walked in I noticed that there were no other customers so I was a bit nervous because it was a Friday night. I ordered my food to go and decided to walk around the place while I waited for my food.

The colors were a huge change from what I remembered it to be before. There was a aqua toned blue on the walls and paintings with contrasting colors that made the place pop. I really liked what they did with the bar as it was black and had a clean/smooth look to it. I noticed that they had a poster hung that advertised half off margaritas on Thursdays and that piqued my interests. At this point I was still a little nervous about the food, but if it was decent I could see myself going back for drinks.

When my order came I couldn’t believe how much stuff the server was carrying; I thought she had my order and someone else’s. She assured me that it was all mine. As this was my first visit I wanted to make sure to get a variety of things for my family and I to try. First, I ordered a sampler that included jalapeno poppers, mini chimis (chimichangas), mini quesadillas, and taquitos. All of these items were a hit at the house. The crowd favorite seemed to be the mini chimis. My wife commented on how good they were a couple of multiple times. They were cheesy and had a nice kick to them. You receive 2 with 1 being chicken and the other beef. You can’t really go wrong with jalapeno poppers and quesadillas; both were good. The taquitos were not our favorite, but sill okay. Not anything against the restaurant, I do not think that I am a huge fan of them in general. I would buy this sampler again!

Next, I made sure to order a enchilada and taco combo for my wife and that came with your typical sides of rice and beans. She is a lover of Mexican food and she could probably eat it almost every day. She liked the order. Nothing major to report.

Finally, for myself I ordered something that I tend to have to try at Mexican restaurants…Carne Asada. When I opened the containers I noticed that I did not see a lime. The lime is key to give you that extra little oomph of flavor and i was sad that I did not get one. Oh well, not a deal breaker. I did like the flavor, but the meat was a tad tough for my liking. It was hard to cut with the plastic knife I was given. Again, not a deal break and overall it was really good food. We also received chips & salsa with our meal and they seemed to be homemade which is a plus and the only improvement would have  been a little salt on the chips.

Needless to say, we were full and there was plenty of food left for lunch the next day. I think that my family was all in agreement that we would go back to Puerto Vallarta. I assume that the slow night was an abnormalcy and is not typical of their establishment. The food was good and very affordable. Everything mentioned totalled just under $35 and for a family that can be helpful. I always appreciate a place that gives you enough food to make multiple meals. I would recommend this restaurant to friends if they were looking for a place to dine. Maybe we will go back soon and hopefully on a Thursday when we can try those margaritas!
